Making a Simple Weather Station

Having aweather station in your home will allow you to check the current weather conditions. It will allow you to tell the current wind speed, amount of rainfall, temperature change among other elements. The weather station has proven to be a real source of help for many people that have used them. They can also very easily be made within the home. It is usually a collection of various instruments used to measure different weather elements and the assembling can very easily be done at home. The putting together of the entire station can be a fun and interesting activity that you can all get involved in as a family. Below are the steps that you can follow to get the station.

You will need to have a journal in which you will record all the informationthat you will read from the various weather instruments. Ensure that the recording of information is done at the same time every day so that you can be able to record the weather patterns.

Temperature will be measured using a thermometer. You will have to buy one for this purpose.

Rainfall will be measured using the rain gauge. A rain gauge can very easily be made at home. Get a cup or a jar and tape to the side of it a ruler. It would however be easier for you to use a measuring cup that has already been calibrated but in the event that you do not have one the former idea will work just fine. Position the rain gauge at a place where it is sheltered from the wind.

Air Pressure will be measured using a barometer. To make one, you will need some gum, a ruler, a drinking straw and clear glass. Pour water into the glass until it is half full and have the ruler taped into the inside of the glass. Take the straw then tape it onto the ruler also. Make sure thatit is about an inch away from the bottom of the glass. Chew on the gum a bit after which you shouldsuck on the straw until it is halfway filled with water. Use the chewed the gum to seal the top of the straw so that you can hold the water firmly in place. Use a permanent marker to mark the level at which the water is at on the straw. The impact of air pressure on the water in the glass will cause the rise and fall of the water in the straw. As the air pressure increases, more water will get into the straw causing the level to rise and versa. You can then measure the movement of the level of water in the straw.

Wind direction is normally measured using the wind vane. With the wind vane, you can opt to either make it for yourself or buy it. To make one, take construction pare and cut out of it the shape of an arrow point; cut out four of them. Tape these cut outs to the end of a straw. Within the middle of the straw, push a pin and stick it onto a pencil eraser on the other end. Ensure that the pin does not restrict the movement of the straw. Stick the pencil tip in clay to ensure that it remains standing upright.

Wind speed is usually measured using an anemometer. To make one you will need five plastic cups and make a straw sized hole in four of them. Make sure that all the holes line up. Through the bottom of the fifth cup, poke a pencil; make sure that it is placed exactly at the centre. Pair the cups and glue a straw though them. The straws from the two pairs ought to cross the fifth cup’s centre. Stick the pencil tip into clay to hold it firmly in place.

Once you have made all the instruments, gather them together and place them outside in an area where there is limited sunlight. The thermometer is very sensitive and should not be exposed to other weather conditions or be placed under direct sunlight. Place each device in a way that allows you to easily record the measurements and the area should also be one that does not experience much activity.
